Storekeeper comments:

We are barely into spring and I’m already bracing myself for autumn, thanks to the Crystal Stilts. There must be something in Brooklyn’s water because great bands keep coming out of there. This one barely has space on its sleeves to hang its Joy Division, Jesus & Mary Chain, Velvet Underground and House of Love influences, but it somehow pulls it off in the most charmingly nostalgic way. The single “Departure” even reminds me of (obscure to you) post-punk Brasilian band Violeta de Outono in its dreamy melody, 60s LSD victim lyrics and dark bass. B-side “Prismatic Room” goes deeper into what went wrong with the Flower Power generation, via Mazzy Star and The Doors. I imagine the whole band wears severe black bangs.

Catchy tunes that encapsulate a whole range of moods. Sounds for nite lives, for neon rooms, for that house party you threw last weekend that got out of control.

Storekeeper comments:

Who wins in a fight between Betty and Marina? There’s no contest really: Marina may show off her diamonds, or even make bullets out of them, but we all know that you need silver to bring down a werewolf. Betty, dressed up in yellow tweed, scratches Marina’s face off then pogoes into the sunset, late for a cupcake picnic in Regent’s Park.

And what about Betty versus Zombina? Ohhhh, Zombina is a terrifying one, with her hoard of zombie-like fans that never miss any of her gigs and her infectious horror pop. But here comes Betty with her Sarah Records, flinging vinyls left, right and centre, chopping off every skeletone head in her way. Zombina is all alone now, crying into her pillow while Betty raises an Earl Grey cup in triumph and the full moon shines in the sky.

Golden Age

Classics from the age of gas guzzlers, drive-ins, carnival carnies, blond bombshells, jukebox diners and cult black & whites.

This small independent label is based in Stoke Newington, London. I know the guys in most of these bands and I’m always up for checking out their gigs either at Ryan’s Bar on Church Street or in the depths of wild New Cross. Their influences range from 60s French pop (Guess What) to Neutral Milk Hotel (Pissinboy). For more info on upcoming gigs and releases: Catapulte Records

September Light

Posted 3 days ago (0 comments)

The other day the lights went out on the Peoples Music Store and I thought “this is it.” But then the lights came back on – the sort of autumnal light Britain is experiencing right now towards the end of its summer.

There’s only one thing to do when the knowledge of what’s ahead fills you with dread: music! This month, the Single of the Fortnight goes to Lloyd Cole’s Writer’s Retreat! and the Album of the Month is stolen by Betty and the Werewolves’ Tea Time Favorites.
